Yes, a 2-node multisite cluster is possible with SQL Server Standard Edition. Of course, you will have to span your subnet as SQL 2008 R2 does not support cluster nodes in different subnets. And what I just found out is that even with SQL 2012 Standard edition you will still need to span subnets.
Thank you for the post. My first Geographically Dispersed SQL Server Instance (GeDiSSIn in short) is up and running. I'm using SteelEye for my supporting database servers (Distributor, Mirror Witness and General DBA Management Instances) as Microsoft does not have a way to mirror the distributor database and/or the mirror witness functionality.

Thanks a bunch for the reply Dave, appreciate your assistance and guidance!
A few more questions :
1) How easy is it to force a quorum online in case of a site loss?
2) I need more details on the failover process in case of:
     (a) Failover within the same site
     (b) Failover across sites
AFAIK, the above failovers are not similar to the single site clusters wherein we have shared disks, here we would have to depend on the storage replication solution for failover, correct me if I am wrong. If that is the case, then how will the failover happen "automatically" if the FSW is placed in 3rd location? Won't we have to manually mount the disks in the 2nd site incase the 1st site is down (and vice versa)? Please advise. My apologies if I have asked too many questions..

If you want a 2 x 2 cluster you will need to use a File Share Witness (FSW). In order to have automated failover, the File Share Witness MUST reside in a 3rd location.
